Street Fashion Trend
While much fashion, and consequently many fashion trends, are established by (often) well known designers in fashion houses and design studios, street fashion is inspired by just that – the streets.Street fashion trends are generally created by youth culture, and is most often seen in large urban areas with a heavily concentrated population. Trends in street fashion tend to be experimental, often being the first to embrace fashions that will later come into popularity with the general public; mainstream fashion frequently adopts elements from street style, using it to influence its collections.
Examples of general street fashion trends that are tipped by major fashion magazines to be coming in for 2009 are harem trousers – a true 80s revival! – geek-chic glasses, studded boots, full skirts and play suits. However for many `street style` is directly associated with urban clothing, which, rather than embracing a love for the quirky items and vintage finds that are often the staple of popular `street wear`, is defined by it`s strong lines, heavily structured pieces, muted colours and durability. Urban street fashion trends do not aim to look attention grabbing in their defiance of regular clothing conventions, but instead maintain an air of being subtly cool.
A major brand at the forefront of UK urban `street wear` trends is Bench, who continually create high-quality ranges of clothing. By taking a look at the Bench clothing range for 2009 it is clear to see what the central urban fashion trends will be this season.
Jeans are, as is true for every fashion trend since their invention, a wardrobe staple. However, we`re all aware of just how many different shades and styles the humble jeans are available in, and while baggy may be popular with some, and skin-tight popular with other, this season Bench is encouraging men to wear straight-legged jeans in dark denim washes. As for the ladies, there`s are much wider variety of styles available. The Elton and Haydock ladies jeans, for example, are both skinny-cut jeans made a darkly washed denim, whereas the Nervina V2 and Pertuna V2 jeans are cut with a higher waist and flared leg.
As for the top-half, men should stick to either plain coloured shirts and t-shirts, or ones that feature an understated check of stripe pattern. The colours that feature most predominantly in Bench`s men`s collection this season are black, white, brown and grey, though there are a small number of shirts available in other colours should once fancy a chance. The men`s Resting polo is green, for example, and the Ritual polo is stripy and available in two different colour combinations.
For chillier days there are a range of hoodies and jackets, the vast majority of which feature structured funnel-necks. This trend for funnel-necks can also been seen among the women`s rage of clothing. Not only do most of the jackets, hoodies, and sweatshirts feature this style neck (for example the Duvet Day hoodie and Penthouse jacket), it can also be seen it items such as the Speciality Shirt dress.
So, if you want to look cool on the streets this season, follow the example set by Bench clothing, and stick to highly functional and structured pieces, wrought from durable materials and produced in muted, block colours.
